EDUCATION

MARCUS LACEWELL

Ask yourself, ‘Where have I received the majority of my education?’ Now, there are two ways to consider this one question. First, one must define education. The Webster Dictionary defines it as such: the act or process of educating. And, it defines educate as; impart knowledge and training to develop mentally and morally by instruction.

It is easy to think of education the traditional way. Relating it with school. But, in actuality, an education can be achieved from many places. Not just by the school, but also by one’s parents, one’s peers and even by one’s general society. The ‘chain of command,’ and timing, takes the form of; PARENTS, PeeRS, GeneraL SocietY and school.

There are two sub-types of education. There is a ‘bad’ type and a ‘good’ type. The ‘bad’ type is USUALLY learned from one’s peers and general society. Yet, the view one has of their peers is USUALLY derived from the education one receives from their parents; like racism. Oh yes, racism is still strong. I have heard, seen and been confronted by some very racist people. People in the military, government, doctors, lawyers, policemen, etc. These people make up the society. This society overflows into the school atmosphere. I feel that equally funded segregation is the only solution to many of the school problems, in this country. Yet, I choose to fight with my pen.

Yes, many have changed their strong racist views. But, many have not. I am not looking for agreements or disagreements. I am only expressing how I feel, based on my experiences. ‘Racism’ is a good example to differentiate between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ education. Unlearn.
